Survivors of the Muslim religion’s most important pilgrimage today spoke of the moments of terror they experienced as people collapsed from exhaustion and others disappeared after hours in the 50C sun.
“There were corpses on the ground; I saw people suddenly losing consciousness and dying from exhaustion,” Mohammed, 31, told the French news agency France-Presse (AFP), speaking to some of the survivors of the deadliest hajj, the hajj. a sacred pilgrimage to Mecca that every Muslim must undertake at least once in their life.
The Egyptian man, who made the pilgrimage with his 56-year-old mother, spoke of the difficulties of praying for hours under a sun that topped 50 degrees in Mecca this week, without access to facilities provided by Saudi Arabian authorities only for registered pilgrims.
