The population of Ados Francos in Caldas da Rainha and Azambujeira in Benedita (Alcobaça) are in shock after the death on Thursday in a traffic accident of a 17-year-old girl whose residence was divided between the two locations.
The municipality of Caldas da Rainha said in a statement that “due to this tragic loss and as a sign of deep respect for the young woman and her family” it had decided to cancel the public procession parade planned for that day. Saturday in the city, in which Erica Adrian will take part, as part of the A dos Francos march.
This is a feeling of pain and horror, since the girl was highly respected for her friendliness, kindness, joy and talent – qualities emphasized by those who knew her.
The girl died as a result of a head-on collision between the moped she was riding and a car. The accident occurred at around 13:25 on the EN361 highway, on a straight road near the exit from the town of A dos Francos towards the village of Landal, in circumstances that are being investigated by the GNR’s criminal investigation department for traffic matters. Accident officers who conducted an investigation at the scene to understand what caused the collision.
When firefighters from Caldas da Rainha arrived to assist, the victim was in cardiopulmonary arrest. Attempts were made to turn the situation around, including thanks to the intervention of the Caldas da Rainha ambulance and intensive care team. However, Erica Adrian did not survive and died on the spot.
Óbidos firefighters took the body of the young woman to the Oeste Forensic Bureau in Torres Vedras for an autopsy.
The vehicle involved in the accident was driven by a 61-year-old man, who was treated and assessed at the scene. He did not have any injuries and refused transport to the hospital.
Staff from the INEM Center for Psychological Support and Crisis Intervention provided psychological support to him and the family of the victim, who was born in Caldas da Rainha and whose residence was divided between A dos Francos and Azambujeira, where the parents lived separately. Funeral arrangements await planning.
To carry out the necessary activities, in which about two dozen operatives and a dozen vehicles were involved, traffic was blocked for three and a half hours.
