81 Chukotka schoolchildren will be employed in reindeer herding and marine hunting brigades, the Chukotka news agency reported on June 22.
Traditionally, schoolchildren returning from boarding schools to their families in the summer help their parents by doing unpaid work as shepherds’ assistants, sea hunters, and plague workers.
According to Governor Vladislav Kuznetsov, this makes it possible to preserve the continuity of traditional industries and increase the prestige among young people of the profession of reindeer herder and marine mammal hunter. Students will be able to acquire practical skills that will be useful to them in the future. The budget provides for payments for children: each schoolchild participating in the program will receive 15 thousand rubles.
41 schoolchildren will work in the reindeer herding brigades and 40 schoolchildren in the marine animal hunting brigades. They will be assigned 57 experienced mentors.
Let us remember that reindeer husbandry is the only branch of agriculture in which the entire small indigenous population of the North is employed, it is not only the basic branch of their traditional economy, but also ethnoculture, customs, it is a special type from Arctic; , circumpolar civilization, which has its own deep history, rich culture, carefully preserved traditions and beliefs (circumpolar civilization is a symbiosis of traditional northern spirituality and the latest scientific innovations and life-support technologies).
For the Russian Arctic, venison is a key element of the regional food security system. This national issue is the focus of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
