Russia has drawn attention to statements that Russia’s military presence in Armenia can be considered a security threat, Russian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Armenia Sergey Kopirkin said on February 10, reports Sputnik Armenia.
In his opinion, these statements are just rhetoric, which do not reflect the real position of the Armenian authorities. He added that Russia is actively working to solve the whole range of problems in Transcaucasia, first of all, this concerns the Armenian-Azerbaijani settlement. Russia is helping to maintain stability in the region and ensure the safety of the population in particularly vulnerable areas.
“The reasoning that Russia, they say, is leaving is, most likely, wishful thinking. Apparently, people expect thought to be material, and if you constantly express it, this will happen. I can say with complete certainty that this is not part of Russia’s plans.– said Kopirkin.
He noted that the Transcaucasus is a very important region and Russia is a part of it, as evidenced by its geography, history and existing ties.
“In addition, we have obligations to Armenia, we are not going to reject these obligations. To speak of our imaginary departure is to speculate”– concluded the ambassador.
Remember that in January 2023, Gurgen Arsenyan, a deputy from the ruling Civil Contract faction, said that Turkey has never threatened Armenia, and if Russia withdraws troops from Armenia, Turkey will become “ordinary neighbor”.
“Russia’s military presence on the Turkish border is a military threat directed against Turkey. If in any country there is a military presence from a third party and this is explained by the threat emanating from Turkey, then it must be said that Turkey has never threatened Armenia. We have no facts to show that Turkey has ever threatened Armenia since its independence.” said the deputy.
