The former president of the Batalha chamber, José António Martins de Souza Lucas, died this Sunday morning at the age of 64, the victim of a long illness, the municipality of the Leiria district announced.
António Lucas was vice-president of the chamber from 1994 to 1998, president of the municipality for 16 years, successively from 1998 to 2013, first elected by the CDS-PP and then by the PSD, and president of the Municipal Assembly of Batalha. from 2013 to 2017.
In a message left on social networks, the municipality of Batalha states that “António Lucas was a person dedicated to public service, marking Batalha and Batallense, leaving a significant legacy.”
The message from the chamber, led by Raúl Castro, recalls the words of the former mayor addressed to municipal employees in his last year in office: “I am just the face of the project. There are only moments of glory, because we all work with the same goal – creating better conditions for the population municipality”.
According to the newspaper Região de Leiria, António Lucas has also been involved in business administration and consulting in recent years and has served on the boards of the Humanitarian Association of Volunteer Firefighters and the Santa Casa da Misericórdia da Batalha.
