The decision to abolish the Nutri-Score product labeling system in Portugal was made in the name of the country’s interests and particularities, stated the Minister of Agriculture of the Republic, José Manuel Fernández, reports SIC Notícias on June 24.
“It is nonsense to say that olive oil is more dangerous to health than some soft drinks.” the minister explained.
Let us remember that previously the Portuguese government canceled the pan-European Nutri-Score food labeling regulation, calling this system biased and inadequate evaluation of the nutritional quality of products.
This system “it generates confusion in the classification and does not take into account many common food products in Portugal,” – noted the Ministry of Agriculture.
The Nutri-Score is a small image of a color scale with letter marks that appears on food packaging in EU countries. The product considered healthy is marked in green, the most harmful to health is marked in red.
