Margot Friedlander, a 102-year-old Holocaust survivor, has been chosen for the July/August cover of German Vogue. “She wants to speak. On behalf of the victims who can no longer do so,” said a journalist who interviewed the German woman for the latest issue of the magazine.
The theme of the issue was “love,” and the word was written in Margot Friedlander’s handwriting.
Annie Margot Bendheim was born in Berlin into a Jewish family. Her entire family died in the Auschwitz concentration camp, which is currently located in Poland. As the only woman to survive the Nazi regime, the German woman dedicated her life to telling the stories of what happened during the Holocaust. He created a foundation in his name and held several talks with children and young people about his history and anti-Semitism.
At the age of 21, she was also captured and sent to a concentration camp. There he met an old friend Adolf. Soon after their release, they married and immigrated to New York, USA. When her husband died, Margot decided to return to Germany.
Friedlander was twelve years old when Hitler came to power. He remembers exactly how it all started and that’s why he feels the need to talk. In an interview with the magazine, the German woman did not hesitate to talk about the current political context in her country with the rise of far-right forces. “Of course, I am aware of what is happening in our society. That more and more young people are attracted to the right-wing slogans of the AfD, that the number of anti-Semitic attacks is increasing and that politicians are being beaten in the streets,” he said. .
Despite her age, Margot never tires of fighting against oblivion and for greater humanity. “Don’t look at what divides you. Look at what unites you. Be humane, be reasonable,” Margot said in an interview with Vogue.
For an interview, Vogue met with the centenarian elder four times. The first time was in January, at a rally to mark the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of National Socialism. The second and third meetings took place three months later to try on clothes for the photo shoot. The last meeting with the next interview took place at the end of April.
Margot currently lives in a nursing home in West Berlin. He loves company and being surrounded by people.
