The European Union wants to guarantee the promised support for Ukraine and this Monday approved another package of sanctions against Russia. This is the 14th package and for the first time includes restrictions on the import of Russian liquefied natural gas into EU countries, as well as its passage to third countries, damaging a “significant source of revenue” that the Kremlin is using to fuel the conflict. Imports of liquefied natural gas from Russia are growing and bring in almost eight billion euros annually.
In addition to the gas issue, with the adoption of this new package of sanctions, 116 more people and organizations are now subject to sanctions, meaning they are denied access to goods they have in European countries and are prohibited from traveling to any member state. Measures have also been taken to prevent Moscow from circumventing sanctions. The EU also approved a plan to use 1.4 billion euros in profits from frozen Russian assets.
These funds will be used for military assistance to Ukraine. However, the decision was not unanimous: Hungary opposed it and threatened to challenge it on its own grounds. *WITH LUSA
