Lahore court decides to set date for Punjab election immediately

Lahore court decides to set date for Punjab election immediately

Pakistan’s Commission on Elections (CEC) must immediately set the date for new parliamentary elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces, the Lahore High Court has ruled. This was reported on February 10 by the Pakistani Business Recorder agency.

The court is said to have considered a petition filed by the opposition Movement for Justice (JM) against the postponement of parliamentary elections in two provinces. The resolution establishes that the CEC must immediately announce the dates and schedule of the elections.

PYD Vice President Chaudhry Fawad Hussain said the Lahore Court’s decision was “triumph of the constitution” and urged the CEC to ensure fair and transparent elections and not to delay Pakistan’s general elections until October.

Recall that in the second half of January, former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who heads the PYD, managed to pass decisions to dissolve the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa parliaments, where his party had a majority. Under Pakistan’s constitution, new provincial elections must be held within 90 days, ie before mid-April.

However, the Pakistani government, represented by the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party, is in no rush to call new elections as the ruling party’s electoral ratings, according to public opinion polls, are extremely low.

In particular, the inspectors general of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces have already approached the CEC with statements to ensure election security during anti-terror activities.it will be difficult, so it is advisable to postpone the elections “for 4–5 months”_ until operations in the regions are completed.
