The World Bank announced this Friday the approval of a new project to repair Ukraine’s transport network, for which it will allocate almost 50 million euros.
Funding for this project will come from the Ukraine Relief, Recovery, Reconstruction, and Reform Trust Fund (URTF), which was established by the World Bank to coordinate a grant to support Ukraine’s government functions, provide services, and help the country.
This is the second emergency operation approved by the World Bank in recent months (the first was carried out in December last year and was aimed at repairing health infrastructure).
The Rehabilitation of Basic Logistics Infrastructure and Networking (RELINC) project will also help rehabilitate major bridges and railways to bring communities together and improve transport connectivity, mitigating the impact of maritime disruptions in the Black Sea.
Assistance will be provided to procure modular bridges, equipment and supplies to repair damaged roads and vital railroad tracks, and help finance the purchase of railroad materials.
“This project will support the provision of necessary assistance and services to the population directly affected by the war and will boost the Ukrainian economy,” said Anna Bjerde, World Bank Vice President for Europe and Central Asia.
According to the World Bank, more than 2,100 villages, 51 towns and 35 cities in areas that have returned to the control of the Ukrainian government are experiencing disruptions in the transport network.
To date, the World Bank has mobilized over €18 billion in emergency funding for Ukraine.
