Six people with some connection to politics were killed at different times and in different places in the so-called Baixada Fluminense, a group of traditionally violent cities in the metropolitan area of the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, in just 11 days. The victims include two candidates for local elections next October, the children of two candidates and a mayoral adviser.
WBecause the crimes occurred on different days, in different cities and under different circumstances, each of the deaths is currently being investigated individually by the Rio de Janeiro Homicide Unit. But the large number of victims with the same general characteristics who are candidates for the October election or associated with the candidates has already begun to draw attention to the possibility that the crimes were in fact politically motivated.
The first of this series of murders occurred on June 11 in the city of Seropedica, like all the others, neighboring Rio de Janeiro, when two brothers, Everton Damian Sa Passos Nascimento Junior, 18, and Cahua Marinho Nascimento, 20, were shot dead. , riddled with bullets as they chatted calmly at the main gate, were the children of councilor candidate Shirley Marinho.
The most recent incident occurred last Saturday, June 22, in the city of Duque de Caxias, when armed men started shooting and killed Michel Laeber Estevan, 41, who was also standing calmly at the door of his house talking with other women. . Known as Xexeu, Laeber was already a traditional name in city politics, one of the most important in Baixada Fluminense, and served as an advisor to the local mayor, Wilson Reis.
Between these two incidents, three more people linked to the world of brutal politics in the state of Rio de Janeiro were killed. One of these victims was Liversino Marcelino dos Santos, 49 years old, candidate for councilor of the city of Guapimirim, killed on the 20th in another city in the region, Maga, while leaving a bar.
A few days earlier, on June 15, another person who intended to stand in this year’s local elections, Juliana Lira de Souza Silva, 44, candidate for councilor for Nueva Iguazu, was shot dead by four men who suddenly pulled up in a black car. bar where she was with her son Alexandre de Souza Gomez and they shot both of them several times at close range. 27-year-old Alexander, who was helping his mother in the election campaign, also died.
