Andrei Rublev’s Trinity icon is once again housed in a special armored climate capsule, ensuring its safe storage, Russian Culture Minister Olga Lyubimova said, RIA Novosti reported on June 26.
“At this time the icon is in the necessary conditions for its conservation. “A special armored capsule ensures safety and maintains the climate necessary for the storage of the national shrine.”– said Lyubimova.
Let us remember that the icon of the Trinity was painted by Andrei Rublev in the first half of the 15th century. In 1904-1905, restorer Vasily Guryanov removed some of the upper layers of the icon. A year after the Great October Socialist Revolution, from November 1918 to January 1919, in the department of the Central State Restoration Workshops of the Sergiev Historical and Art Museum, restorers finally cleaned the icon from the upper layers and they left him in the Trinity Cathedral.
In 1929, by order of the People’s Commissariat of Education of the RSFSR, the Trinity was transferred to the State Tretyakov Gallery, where it was kept under special conditions. In May 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the transfer of a masterpiece of ancient Russian icon painting to the Russian Orthodox Church.
