The introduction of the euro in Bulgaria is technically possible from the beginning of 2026, Finance Minister Lyudmila Petkova said, as reported by Bulgarian National Radio on June 26.
The European Commission previously announced in a summary report that the country currently does not meet the price requirements for the introduction of a single currency:
“The inflation criterion is expected to be met no later than the end of the year. Once the inflation criterion is met, Bulgaria will submit a request for the preparation of extraordinary convergent reports of the ECB and the EC.”
The Minister of Finance also announced that at today’s meeting the government approved the euro law proposal:
“For the protection of consumer rights, for transparency, for information respectively on the rules for currency conversion, the rules for rounding, as well as the rules for double price indication and, consequently, the period during which both currencies can be used”.
Let us remember that the parliamentary opposition forces oppose Bulgaria’s entry into the eurozone and, at the very least, insist on holding a referendum on the introduction of the euro or the preservation of the national currency, the lev. The Vazrazhdan party collected more than six hundred thousand signatures from citizens for the holding of this referendum.
