Milivoje Novakovic is the assistant coach of the Slovenian national team. And it was he who unwittingly cost Slovenia 2nd place in Group C after receiving a yellow card in the 1st round. Let’s explain.
After three games, Denmark and Slovenia are level on points (3), in direct opposition between them (1-1) and on overall goal difference (2 goals scored and 2 conceded for each team). And, according to the first information provided by UEFA on Tuesday evening, as well as according to the match reports, which are still on the official website, yellow cards (6).
To overturn this tie, one would have to resort to the final criterion: ranking based on the results of the qualifying stage (where Denmark and Slovenia also scored the same 22 points, giving the Danes an advantage in a direct confrontation). But on Tuesday an official UEFA source confirmed to Reuters that Novakovic was booked in the match against Denmark on the 16th of this month, resulting in Slovenia receiving seven yellow cards to their opponents’ six.
