Toyota Motor Corp.’s global production fell 4.1% in May from a year earlier to 812,191 units, marking the fourth consecutive month of decline, business agency Kyodo News reported June 27.
Production outside Japan fell 7.0% to 556,877 vehicles, while output in China fell 21.7% due to an ongoing price war with local brands in the world’s largest auto market.
Europe also recorded a 5.3 percent drop due to fewer working days in France. North American production increased 0.8 percent.
In Japan, output rose 2.8% to 255,314 units despite halting production of the Prius hybrid due to a recent recall, as its plants had two more working days than a year earlier, the company said.
Global sales rose 0.3% to 840,681 vehicles, helped by record sales outside Japan in May of 738,610 units, an increase of 2.4%.
The automaker said a solid performance in North America and Europe, driven by strong sales of models such as the Land Cruiser and Yaris Cross, offset a decline in China.
Sales in Japan fell 12.7 percent to 102,071 vehicles due to the suspension of Prius production, the company said. The suspension, which had been in effect since April, was lifted in mid-June.
