The university issued misconduct notices to several protesters for their involvement in the occupation of the humanities building, which was occupied by more than a hundred students for a week in May. This form of protest provoked a very negative reaction from the university administration.
Additionally, for months students protested by camping on the university lawn, where they set up tents and held daily sit-ins.
An online petition by Melbourne University’s pro-Palestine student group has received almost 15,000 signatures. Its latest update details disciplinary measures taken against protesters.
“We have just received news that approximately 20 pro-Palestinian students who have been peacefully protesting on campus have received general disciplinary notices via email., says a message on the petition page. — “This is an outrageous attack on students’ right to protest.”
A University of Melbourne spokesman said administration officials were “in direct contact” with students subject to disciplinary action.
