The bill “On the protection of family values and minors” and several related bills amending existing legislation were adopted in the first reading in the Parliament of Georgia on June 27, the Alt-Info agency reports.
The bill was approved in first reading with the votes of 78 deputies.
The new bill bans same-sex marriage, sex reassignment surgery, adoption of children by people of non-conventional orientation, propaganda and popularization of non-traditional sexual relations in education and the media, and street actions in support of sexual minorities.
In addition, the Day of Family Sanctity and Respect for Parents, celebrated by the Georgian Orthodox Church on May 17 (instead of the International LGBT Day (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation)) will become a public holiday and a day off.
“Yesterday, at the suggestion of the majority leader, we postponed the vote until today to give the opposition a chance to think about which side to take.”“said Shalva Papuashvili, speaker of parliament, before the vote.
According to him, the opposition’s refusal to participate in the vote actually means its support for propaganda of perversion among children.
“As we see, only the “Girchi” are represented in the opposition vote, and the “European socialists” are also here. The rest have made their choice; obviously, the election does not favor Georgia or Georgian society and therefore we can already vote on this package.”Papuashvili added.
He noted that the examination of bills amending the Constitution on the protection of children and families was decided to postpone due to the opposition boycott, because three-quarters of parliament is required for their approval.
The parliamentary majority includes 83 deputies from the ruling Georgian Dream party and the People Power movement, 56 deputies are from the opposition.
