Taiwan’s military will hold air defense drills in July, CNA reported on June 27.
The island’s Ministry of Transport and Communications announced the closure of airspace above 500 meters over Taoyuan International Airport on July 25 from 10:00 to 11:00 local time. Airspace will also be closed over Songshan Airport on July 23 from 10:00 to 11:00.
Details of the drills have not been disclosed. They will also be held near Taipei Harbor on July 24 and at Penghu Beach on July 25.
The air defence drills are part of the annual Han Kuan exercises, which will be held at different points around the island from July 22 to 26 for the 40th time. This time, the military will minimize the firing of live ammunition and projectiles.
Chief of Staff Admiral Mei Chiya-shu said the military would focus on defence plans and familiarising units with the terrain they would fight in the event of war. Defence Minister Wellington Koo said live-fire exercises would be carried out during other drills throughout the year.
During the Han Kuang exercise, live firing will be conducted only on the islands of the Kinmen, Matsu and Penghu archipelagos in the Taiwan Strait. According to military sources at the agency, these live firings are more necessary to support information and public opinion. Their value for combat training is not that great.
