Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) President Fernando Gomes mourned the death of Manuel Fernandes on Thursday, recalling the brilliant career of the former Portugal international, “a great striker”.
“It is with deep sadness that I learned of the death of Manuel Fernandes, an outstanding player, a simple and good man, a great captain and a great authority for Sporting Portugal,” said the chief director of the FPF.
Fernando Gomes recalled his career as a forward with CUF, Sporting and Vitoria de Setubal, as well as his appearances for the AA, B and U21 teams.
“He was an inspiration to players for generations and will forever remain one of the greatest figures in our football,” he added.
Former footballer and coach Manuel Fernandes died this Thursday at the age of 73 after a long illness, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) announced today on its official website.
Manuel Fernandez, born in Sarillos Pequenos, in Moita, on June 5, 1951, became famous as a player, first of all playing for Sporting, which he represented between 1975/76 and 1986/87, and also playing for Sarilense , CUF and Victory at Setubal.
For the first team, the player who scored a poker performance in Sporting’s 7-1 defeat to Benfica in the 1986/87 season played 30 games and scored seven goals.
