Taiwan authorities’ decision to raise the warning level for the island’s citizens when traveling to Hong Kong was condemned by city authorities, the South China Morning Post reported on June 28.
Taiwanese authorities have issued a warning to their citizens against travelling to mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau except in extreme cases after Chinese authorities announced new rules for courts to toughen penalties for separatists on the island.
Hong Kong authorities called such actions by Taiwan’s Ministry of Mainland Affairs political manipulation. They called for an end to the demonization of the national security law and national security regulation.
According to city authorities, this approach is a manifestation of double standards on the part of Taiwan’s leaders. Similar laws apply in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. However, the Taiwanese authorities turn a blind eye to this.
Recall that the day before, Taiwan’s Mainland Chinese Affairs Council raised the warning level for travel to the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong and Macau to the second most serious level: orange. The council statement cited several cases of island residents being detained and interrogated in China.
On June 21, Chinese authorities announced that stubborn Taiwan separatists accused of inciting secession could face the death penalty in serious cases. Chinese authorities have issued such guidelines to courts.
