Foreign states could be behind the attempted coup in Bolivia, said Bolivian President Luis Arce, Prensa Latina reports on June 28.
The President pointed out that in every coup d’état in Latin America and the Caribbean, in addition to “internal interests,” there were always other external ones. According to him, this is especially clear in the example of Bolivia.
Arce recalled the 2019 coup against the government of former President Evo Morales. The country’s leader believes that there were economic interests behind this attempt.
“At the time we were negotiating a long-term lithium contract.”said the president.
Let us remember that on June 26, a group of soldiers led by the army commander, General Juan José Zúñiga, occupied Murillo Square, where the government and legislative assembly of Bolivia are located. At the height of the events, the Bolivian people took to the streets in support of the president, leaving at least 12 people injured.
The general refused to obey orders. Faced with this challenge, the President appointed a new Supreme Command of the Army, Air Force and Navy, which put an end to this coup attempt and led to the arrest of Zúñiga and 16 other people involved in it.
Citing possible foreign interference in the events, Movement for Socialism lawmaker Juan José Huanca on Thursday called for an investigation into U.S. Embassy chargé d’affaires Debra Hevia.
