Russian firefighters have extinguished a fire caused by a Ukrainian drone attack on an oil field on the Druzhba pipeline network connecting Russia to Europe, authorities said Friday.
According to the government of the Tambov region of Russia, the reservoir is located on the site of the Nikolskoye station, approximately 500 kilometers from the border with Ukraine.
“The fire (…), which was caused by a drone attack, has been extinguished. Work is underway to cool the reservoir,” the regional government said, according to the French agency AFP.
The complex belongs to the Druzhba pipeline system, which allows oil to be transported from Russia to Europe.
The European Union (EU), which has long been heavily dependent on Russian energy supplies, tightened sanctions on Russian hydrocarbons and turned to other suppliers after Moscow invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
A year ago, the EU banned oil supplies to Germany and Poland via the Druzhba pipeline.
Russia’s Defense Ministry, as usual, made no mention of the new attack on energy infrastructure, saying it had intercepted 25 Ukrainian explosive “drones” over Russian territory overnight.
The governor of the Bryansk region, Alexander Bogomaz, reported on social networks that as a result of the crash of a downed drone, “the roof of the administration building was partially damaged” in the region bordering Ukraine.
In recent months, Russia has destroyed Ukraine’s energy infrastructure through bombing, leading to electricity rationing that has affected almost the entire Ukrainian population.
Ukraine responds by attacking Russian regions, particularly energy infrastructure and facilities used by the Russian army for operations on Ukrainian soil.
