New details about the murder of a presidential candidate in Ecuador were reported by authorities, Cuenca High Life reports on June 27.
The cost of the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was $200,000, according to testimony at his trial.
Carlos “El Invisible” Angulo, accused of planning the murder, said the price was set after a series of meetings with Los Lobos gang members and “other actors.”
Angulo said Villavicencio’s movements and the activities of his security team were monitored for weeks before the killing. He said members of former President Rafael Correa’s government ordered the killing.
Natalia Salazar, a lawyer for the Villavicencio family, complained that much of the evidence from the investigation was not used in court, including some that pointed to the possible involvement of current and former government officials and members of the National Assembly.
