The work of the commission of inquiry into the case of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins will last until July 26, will be suspended in August and resumed on September 10, the parties approved this Friday.
The decision to stop work was announced before the children’s mother’s lawyer, Wilson Bicalho, was heard.
Regarding the approval of the hearings of former ministers Augusto Santos Silva and Francisca Van Dunem, proposed by IL and Chega, the PS parliamentary group asked for the vote to be postponed.
Political parties also voted to hear representatives of the Brazilian insurance company Amil Assistência Médica Internacional LTD during the events, at the request of the PSD.
“Deputies of the Social Democratic Party hereby request documentation regarding the conclusion of the relevant health insurance contract, the policy with all annexes indicating the date of conclusion of the insurance, the object and the corresponding coverage and/or the policyholders and their beneficiaries,” says the document, to which access agency Lusa.
“They also require that top managers (namely the relevant CEO) be heard by video conference, if the company does not have a representative office in Portugal, to receive information and provide clarification regarding their interests and to monitor the process in Brazil and Portugal,” adds PSD.
The case in point is the hospital treatment of two Portuguese-Brazilian children who received the drug Zolgensma, a two-million-euro drug designed to control the spread of spinal muscular atrophy, a neurodegenerative disease.
The case is still being investigated by the Prosecutor General’s Office, but the General Inspectorate of Health has already concluded that these children’s access to neuropediatric consultation was illegal.
An internal audit of Santa Maria Hospital also concluded that the state Department of Health’s initial hospital admissions schedule was the only exception to compliance in this case.
