The island’s Defense Ministry will pay more attention to who visits Taiwan’s think tanks following the case of a former Chinese government official, Taiwan News reported on June 28.
The Liberty Times newspaper reported that a delegation from the British bank HSBC visited the Institute for National Defense and Security Research (INDSR). It was run by a man called David Yi-chen Liao, who was appointed co-chief executive of the bank’s Asia-Pacific business.
However, journalists discovered that he was participating in the Beijing Political Consultative Conference, part of the political system of the People’s Republic of China. The other two members of the delegation were Taiwanese who worked for HSBC.
The island’s Ministry of Defense said the National Security and Defense Research Institute is located on a military facility. Visitors must request a visit and be accompanied at all times by institute staff.
Analytical center employees are prohibited from discussing confidential information with visitors, the military said. The ministry has asked the institute to consider whether it needs to change its foreign visit procedures to avoid possible infiltration by Chinese agents.
At the same time, the military recognizes that the institute needs to have a wide range of contacts to carry out its activities.
