A Barbados-flagged ship, heading from Russia to Tunisia with a cargo of wheat, ran aground in the Sea of Marmara off the coast of Istanbul, TGRT Haber reported on June 26, citing the Turkish Coast Guard General Directorate.
The incident occurred after the ship attempted to anchor in the Yeşilkoy area, which is located in the southwestern part of Istanbul, next to the former Ataturk Airport.
Rescue services were immediately dispatched to the 169-metre-long bulk carrier Lady Ayana to provide assistance, including the high-speed ship KEGM-3 and the tugboat “Spasenenie-10” belonging to the Main Coast Guard Directorate of the Ministry of Transport.
The cargo ship had to deliver its cargo to Tunisia before July 5.
It should be noted that this incident was not the first this year in the Turkish Strait. A similar event already occurred in January in the Bosphorus, when the 250-meter-long oil tanker Peria, flagged by Liberia, en route from Russia to Izmir, stopped due to a broken anchor and bad weather. Two tugboats and a coast guard ship were deployed to tow the tanker, causing a temporary disruption to Bosphorus transit.
In March, there was also an incident involving the cargo ship Sea Turtle, whose steering failed, leading to a temporary halt to maritime traffic in the strait.
