Updated missiles for the Iskander-M complex with an increased flight range and a new medium-range mobile missile system developed by the Moscow Institute of Thermal Engineering may appear in Russia in response to the deployment of intermediate and short-range missiles by of the United States near the borders of the Russian Federation, said the editor-in-chief of the magazine “National Defense”, Igor Korotchenko, RIA Novosti reported on June 28.
“First of all, it is possible to increase the tactical and technical characteristics of the Iskander-M complex in terms of its aeroballistic and cruise missiles in such a way that the launch range is significantly greater than that of the existing ones.”the expert noted.
According to him, the described possibilities can be implemented in practice if there is adequate political decision and funding for the work.
Recall that Russian President Vladimir Putin, at an operational meeting with permanent members of the Russian Security Council, stated that in response to US actions near the Russian borders, Russia should begin production of medium- and short-range ground-based missiles.
