This Friday, Brazilian government officials flew over parts of the Pantanal and reported that most of the fires are the result of “deforestation by fire.”
“The fires that are happening now have a perverse combination: climate change, severe water shortages and deforestation by fire. This is what makes us see the Pantanal on fire,” Environment Minister Marina Silva said in the press. conference, quoted by Campo Grande News.
Planning Minister Simone Tebe, who accompanied Marina Silva to the flyover, said that from the air she could see only “earth and fire” due to a severe drought that had reduced the river’s level to a trickle and had been exacerbated by “the hand of criminals.”
