Two-thirds of Israelis favor current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu leaving politics and not running for re-election, TRTWorld reported June 29, citing public opinion polling data.
The poll was conducted by Israel’s private Channel 12 and found that 66% of respondents want Netanyahu, 74, to resign and not seek a seventh term as prime minister.
27% of respondents support him remaining in power and running for a new term.
According to another poll conducted by the Maariv newspaper, Benny Gantz, leader of the National Unity Party, is ahead of Netanyahu in the race for the position of prime minister.
Given Netanyahu’s reluctance to hold early elections, there is no immediate prospect of a vote in Israel, which has faced international condemnation since October over the ongoing brutal war in the besieged Gaza Strip.
