Mozambique’s president says country has ‘unwavering resolve’ to fight insurgency

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said this Friday that the country has an “unshakable determination” to fight the armed insurgency that has affected the Cabo Delgado province in the north of the country since 2017.

“Even with the withdrawal of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) military mission from Mozambique, which is due to end on July 15, our resolve to fight terrorism remains unshakable,” said Filipe Nyusi, addressing members of the Zambian parliament as part of a working visit to neighboring Mozambique. country.

Filipe Nyusi said Mozambique was aware of its “primary responsibility” to defend its territory and noted the success of government forces in fighting rebels in Cabo Delgado.

“The fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado is making significant progress. Our forces, supported by local forces, as well as SADC and Rwandan forces, are destroying terrorist bases, incapacitating their instigators and fighters,” the Mozambican representative said.

Since October 2017, Cabo Delgado has been the scene of an armed uprising, with attacks blamed on movements linked to the extremist group Islamic State.

The last major attack occurred on May 10 and 11 against the Macomia district headquarters, when about a hundred rebels sacked the town, resulting in several deaths and heavy fighting with the Mozambican Defense and Security Forces.

People in other areas of the province report the movement of these groups of rebels, causing panic as they go, in the forests, but with no record of clashes that occur while peasants are trying to carry out harvesting work. in the growing fields.

Mozambique’s president said on June 16 that the actions of various defense forces had eliminated “virtually all” bases of terrorist groups operating in Cabo Delgado, which were now limited to “walking in the bush.”

Filipe Nyusi’s visit to Zambia, which borders Mozambique through Tete province (centre), is aimed at strengthening cooperation between the countries, focusing on the ports, tourism and energy sectors, with several memorandums expected to be signed.
