Democrats are caught between Donald Trump and Joe Biden

After the televised debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, the question is no longer who won the decisive head-to-head in the race for the White House. The question is whether the current president and the Democratic candidate have the conditions to take on this dispute after a clash clearly won by Trump, in which the Republican once again laid the truth, turning the debate into a festival of populism, with a fragile Biden watching passively. Thomas Friedman, one of the most respected commentators in the US, believes Biden should give in. And you are not alone. A New York Times columnist watched the debate in a hotel room in Lisbon (early yesterday morning in the capital) and admits he cried because he couldn’t remember a “more depressing moment” on the campaign trail. Other observers considered Biden’s performance a “disaster” as he failed to appear at the CNN debate from Atlanta with the necessary energy to counter rumors of fatigue and apathy possibly stemming from his 81 years of age.

The in-person meeting, full of strict rules to avoid cost overruns, had little confrontation of ideas and many clashes of skills, with a raucous Biden exchanging names and an aggressive and insulting Trump about to vote with a judicial verdict. that he was trying to soften. Without shame, Trump has embraced vague concepts for complex topics such as rising immigration and an unproven link to rising crime – an issue Biden has defended with a more humanitarian approach. The president uncompromisingly defended policies supporting Ukraine and Israel, which Trump considered “weak.” On abortion, Trump has reiterated his ambiguous stance, leaving the decision up to the states while Biden intends to take a federal decision. The economy was a big part of the debate, with Biden emphasizing the recovery from the pandemic that Trump denied while criticizing rising inflation and fuel prices.

Post-debate polling shows 8 in 10 voters who watched the debate say the standoff had no impact on the presidential choice, but it is understood that could change now that content from the face-to-face conversation is being broken down and shared on social media. Only later will we know whether Biden can hold out until the end or whether Democrats will have to come up with a Plan B led by California Governor Gavin Newsom.
