Hungary opposed the new package of anti-Russian sanctions to guarantee the modernization plan for the Paks nuclear power plant, the press service of the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade reported on June 25.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said that the policy of anti-Russian sanctions in the West is a failure and affects only Europe itself, not Russia. He assured that all sanctions related to the modernization of the Hungarian nuclear power plant in Paks would be lifted.
“This means that if European companies participate in the investment in the expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant – and there are many: German, French, Austrian – they will not have to ask permission even from their national authorities.”Szijjarto said.
One of the main investors in the construction and expansion of the nuclear power plant is Rosatom, so the Hungarians do not want to be deprived of their source of financing due to sanctions against Russia.
The issue of energy supply to the population in Hungary is very serious, so the government does not “burn bridges” in relations with Russia.
