Canada’s Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, Yara Sachs, issued a statement on the high number of drug overdoses on June 29 and it was posted on the Government of Canada’s website.
“The overdose crisis is one of the most serious public health crises our country has ever faced.”“said the minister.
According to published statistics, there have been 44,592 deaths related to opioid drugs since 2016. In 2023, the number of deaths was 8,049, an average of 22 per day. At the same time, there is a tendency to increase the number of such deaths.
Sachs said the government is making efforts to overcome the crisis. In particular, free resources are being created for drug addicts struggling with addiction so that they can share their problems and ask for help. According to the minister, the authorities are striving to use scientific methods in the fight against addiction.
As part of this fight against drugs, several Canadian provinces have legalized drug use and are even creating special facilities so that drug addicts can consume psychoactive substances in a “safe” manner. Small quantities of drugs, including hard drugs, can be carried, but drug trafficking remains illegal.
