A 69-year-old orthopedic doctor suspected of sexually assaulting two minors during a consultation at the Famalicao hospital has been released. A shift judge at the Povoa de Lanhoso court ruled that the man is prohibited from performing clinical duties and from having contact with minors.
Carlos Burmester had already been suspended from his duties at the Vila Nova de Famalicão hospital, where the alleged abuses took place. The case involved sexual contact with two boys, aged 8 and 10, during a consultation in the emergency department.
The latter case became the reason for the arrest of the doctor. This happened on the 19th of this month, and the mother of one of the boys immediately reported the inappropriate behavior to the orthopedist. The complaint was registered at the hospital and at the police headquarters, which referred the case to the Braga court.
The doctor was arrested on Thursday and this Saturday, after more than three hours of questioning by the duty magistrate, he was released along with a family member.
