Anna Ramos Saikali, a former director of Americanas, left for Lisbon about two weeks before the start of a police operation in which she was being pursued on suspicion of participating in a fraud scheme, market manipulation, use of confidential information and criminal association. According to Globo, the businesswoman arrived in Portugal on June 15, and on the 27th Interpol announced measures that included the businesswoman on the list of fugitives from justice.
Saikaly’s defense asked the court to reconsider the preventive measure by presenting a return ticket to Brazil on Saturday evening. According to Brazilian media, the woman will report to Portuguese authorities at Lisbon airport on Saturday evening and hand over her passport to the Brazilian Federal Police once she returns to Brazil.
Defense lawyers say Saikali bought the ticket to Lisbon in advance to celebrate his son’s birthday and not as an escape attempt to avoid arrest. However, they presented a ticket with a return date set for the 26th, and did not explain the reason for the denial of boarding.
In addition to the manager, the former CEO of Americanas, Miguel Gutierrez, who has been in Madrid for a year, has been placed under preventive detention. He was captured on Friday by Spanish police and released after giving evidence. Another 12 executives were searched and detained at addresses in Rio de Janeiro.
