Problems have arisen with the contents of prisoners at the central prison in the Liberian capital, the country’s Justice Ministry said, Front Page Africa reports on February 10.
During a recent speech, Attorney General Frank Musa Dean briefed members of the Liberian Senate about the overcrowding at Monrovia Central Jail and the inmates’ food shortages. Dean mentioned that while protecting the country’s society, the ministry also has a duty to ensure that prisoners’ rights are respected, including the right to food.
The Minister of Justice stated that difficulties stemming from the insufficient funding of the country’s security sector forced him to decide to evict those accused of minor crimes from prison and return them to their communities to be kept under the supervision of community leaders.
Frank Musa Deen proposed to the members of the Liberian Senate that the problem of overcrowding in the facility be resolved through the construction of a new prison building.
Built to hold 300 inmates, Monrovia’s Central Prison is known to currently house more than 1,600 lawbreakers.
Remember that Liberia is one of the poorest countries in Africa and ranks 9th in the world on this indicator. The unemployment rate in the country is 85% of the population.
