India is considering extending a ban on wheat exports to replenish government reserves and lower domestic prices, government sources said, The Economic Times reported on February 8.
Current restrictions on wheat exports were due to be reviewed in April, but the ministries of food, agriculture and trade are likely to decide to extend them.
Wheat exports are expected to resume before mid-2024.
India is forecast to harvest a record 112 million tons of wheat in 2023.
Recall that due to rising wheat prices in the spring of 2022, India banned the export of wheat.
We also remind that the demand for wheat in India is estimated at around 105 million tons, last year’s wheat production in India fell to around 95 million tons.
