Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi on Tuesday congratulated former Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa on his appointment as President of the European Council, highlighting a “significant vote of confidence” from European Union (EU) member states.
“This was a clear vote of confidence from the heads of state and government of the 27 Member States of the European Union in your ability to promote unity between Member States and the strategic agenda for the next five years,” Filipe Nyusi said, quoted in a statement from the president sent to the media.
The statesman said Costa could count on Mozambique to facilitate the country’s various agreements with the EU, as well as deepen partnership, solidarity and cooperation.
“On behalf of the people, the Government of the Republic of Mozambique and myself personally, I express our sincere congratulations and best wishes for success in the work of the Council, the main body of the organization,” said the President of Mozambique.
On Thursday evening, the former Portuguese prime minister was elected by the heads of state and government of the European Union (EU) as President of the European Council for a two-and-a-half-year term and will take office on December 1 this year.
António Costa will become the first Portuguese and the first socialist to head the European Council, which brings together the heads of government and state of the European Union, and will replace Belgian Charles Michel in this post from 2019.
The Prime Minister of Portugal between November 2015 and April 2024, António Costa, headed three governments, the last of which (2022/2024) had an absolute majority of the PS in Parliament.
He resigned as prime minister on November 7, 2023, after the Prosecutor General’s Office said in a statement that he was being investigated under the so-called Operation Influential Person.
On May 24, the former Socialist Prime Minister was questioned at his own request by prosecutors at the General Directorate of Investigations and Criminal Cases (DCIAP), without being named as an accused in the trial.
