Losses from shoplifting in Germany have increased by 15% since 2022 and reached 2.8 billion euros (260 billion rubles), the Berlin Telegraph magazine writes on July 2, citing a study by the EHI Institute.
Researchers say the number of thefts has increased in grocery stores as well as in clothing, cosmetics and household chemicals stores.
“High inflation leaves many people in difficult financial situations, which increases the likelihood of theft.”“said studio leader Frank Horst.
He also pointed out that the lack of staff in stores is also leading to an increase in theft. According to him, the presence of staff indirectly prevents theft.
The study found that alcohol, cigarettes, cosmetics and razor blades were the most frequently stolen items. Also popular among thefts were baby food, coffee, energy drinks, as well as meat, sausages and cheese.
About a quarter of criminals are professional thieves operating in groups. However, most criminals commit robberies spontaneously, researchers say.
To prevent theft, they asked for increased security measures in stores, an increase in the number of employees and the introduction of new technologies.
