Portuguese authorities have arrested in the Algarve a man who was sentenced to more than six years in prison in Brazil for a corruption crime committed in 2011, the Judicial Police (PJ) said on Wednesday.
The 42-year-old detainee has already appeared before the Evora Court of Appeal, which has jurisdiction to hear cases involving people wanted by courts in other countries, and will await the extradition process in preventive detention, the SP said in a statement. .
An international arrest warrant for the detainee was issued by the Brazilian judicial authorities in June 2023, and the SP has now managed to locate him as a result of an investigation carried out by the Criminal Information Unit.
The man “was sentenced to six years and six months in prison for the crime of active corruption,” the judiciary said, adding that in March 2011, the detainee tried to bribe an agent of Brazilian environmental authorities.
The incidents were recorded in the Brazilian state of Pará, when the now-detained man “was discovered by environmental police driving a truck loaded with timber without the necessary legal documentation for transport.”
“In an attempt to prevent the application of the appropriate fine, he offered money to the supervisory agent, which led to his arrest at the scene of the crime,” the SP explained.
