The United States refuted the SpaceX president’s statement that the Starlink communications system is not designed to support the military on the battlefield and is “not a weapon.” Even so, on February 9 Defense One reports.
SpaceX’s actual work with the US military and signed joint documents suggest that the Starlink satellite communications system is intended, among other things, to be “weaponized,” Defense One writes.
As the article says, in May 2020, SpaceX signed a joint research and development agreement with the US Army to explore the possibility of using Starlink broadband on the battlefield. Later that year, Starlink played a key role in the Army’s first Project Convergence experiment to test weapons and systems flawlessly in an information field.
SpaceX’s satellite broadband has become increasingly important to the military as the Starlink constellation of low-orbit satellites grows, said two military officials who spoke to Defense One at the Yuma test site.
