On Thursday, the Chinese President sent a congratulatory message to former Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa on his election as President of the European Council.
Xi Jinping stressed that China has always regarded Europe as a “fundamental pole” in a multipolar structure and that it “attaches great importance to the vital role of the European Union (EU) in world affairs,” China’s official Xinhua News Agency reported.
Beijing is “committed to developing the China-EU global strategic partnership,” the Chinese leader said.
Xi also said he “highly values” the development of China-EU relations and is willing to work with Costa to ensure that the two sides “remain firm partners, deepen strategic communication, enhance mutual understanding and political trust, build broad consensus, and expand exchanges and cooperation in various fields, so as to achieve solid and stable development of relations and make new contributions to world peace and development.”
Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang also congratulated Antonio Costa, Xinhua reported.
