The A3 motorway has been provisionally reopened in the South-North direction after being closed in both directions since 18:33 due to a heavy-duty vehicle accident, the Civil Protection agency in Luz was told.
Traffic “is still very slow, only along the shoulder” in the Anais area of Ponte de Lima, the Alto Minho subregional command said.
The North-South direction, where the collision and subsequent fire of the heavy-duty truck occurred, remains closed.
At around 11:30 p.m., work to extinguish the fire was still ongoing, after which the car and its cargo will be removed, Civil Defense added.
According to the Alto Minho sub-regional command, “a truck carrying timber crashed in a north-south direction and then caught fire, with flames reaching the cargo it was transporting.”
The driver of the car, according to the same source, received first-degree burns.
Firefighters from Ponte de Lima, GNR and Brisa are on scene.
