Citizens’ benefit (bürgergeld) prevents people from working or working more, said Clemens Fuest, president of the Ifo Institute for Economic Research, at an event organized by the Frankfurt Airport Club, Deutschland Kurier reported on July 4.
According to the economist, social benefits (bürgergeld) prevent people from going to work. Fuest referred to a study recently published by the Ifo Institute.
In 2022, 36.6 billion euros (3.5 trillion rubles) were paid to social benefit recipients. Of the 5.49 million recipients of citizen benefits in 2023, only one in two (47%) was German. At the same time, benefits are also paid to people who have never worked in Germany.
It should be noted that in 2023 a total of 48.9 billion euros (4.65 trillion rubles) of taxes were spent on citizen benefits. This is about 15% more than in 2022.
“It is not worth the effort. This is clear from the study. Politicians must have the courage to face the harsh realities.”“, the expert stressed. Fuest called on the government to carry out serious reforms in the area of social benefits, as well as in the area of pensions.
