Leaders of the Latin American far right will meet this weekend, July 6 and 7, for a summit in the Brazilian city of Balneario Camboriu, on the coast of the state of Santa Catarina, known as Brazil’s Dubai because of its giant luxury skyscrapers. Among the most prominent names at the far-right gathering are Argentina’s current president, Javier Miley, and Brazil’s former president, Jair Bolsonaro.
The summit, organized by Brazilian federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro, the son of the former president and one of the leaders of the far right in South America, is a national version of CPAC, the Conservative Political Action Conference, a summit of conservatives and ultra-conservatives in the United States. They say they have met in that country every year since 1973. In Brazil, the conservative summit has been held since 2019, the first year of Jair Bolsonaro’s term, by the Liberal Conservative Institute, chaired by Eduardo.
In addition to Javier Milei and Jair Bolsonaro, the event’s two main stars, at least two Brazilian state governors will be present: Jorginho Melo, governor of Santa Catarina, the state with the most right-wing voters in Brazil, and Tarcísio de Freitas, governor of São Paulo. Dozens of senators, federal deputies, regional deputies, and other Brazilian government officials will attend, including Guilherme Derrite, the controversial public security minister of São Paulo state and defender of its confrontational police force.
Among the foreign guests are also the Minister of Justice and Public Security of El Salvador, Gustavo Villatoro, the President of the Republican Party of Chile (far right) José Antonio Cast, and the singer and former presidential candidate of Mexico, Eduardo Verástegui. The event will officially announce the entry into politics as a candidate for the post of councilor in Balneário Camboriú in the October municipal elections of Jair Renan Bolsonaro, the only son of Jair Bolsonaro who has not yet entered politics.
The holding of this summit of extremists forced Brazilian President Lula da Silva to cancel a visit to Santa Catarina planned for this Saturday. Lula was due to inaugurate works at the port of Itajaí, a city neighboring Balneário Camboriú, but cancelled the visit because, according to his advisers, there were no security conditions given the large number of right-wing radicals in the region.
