Arne Espeel, the 25-year-old Belgian goalkeeper, died on Saturday evening moments after a penalty was saved.
The goalkeeper, according to the press of this country, felt unwell on the field during the match between his team Winkel Sport B and SK Westrozebeke, as a result of which he fell to the ground unconscious.
The referee interrupted the match and Espeel was immediately treated and taken to the hospital, but in the end he did not fight back. His parents and brother were present at the stadium watching the match.
“Winkel Sport deeply regrets the sudden death of goalkeeper Arne Espeel. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends for this great loss. Football has ceased to be so important for a while,” Winkel Sport said in a social media statement.
