The Ukrainian World Congress congratulated António Costa on his election as President of the European Council, expressing hope that his leadership will support Ukraine’s efforts to restore its territorial integrity, guarantee peace and membership in the European Union.
In a congratulatory letter dated today, signed by Paul Grod, president of the organization that represents some 20 million Ukrainians in the diaspora in 60 countries, including Portugal, the World Ukrainian Congress (WUC) recalled the actions of António Costa as Prime Minister of Portugal in favor of Ukraine and expressed its conviction that the leadership of the European Council will help Ukraine achieve its goals.
“We trust that your leadership will support Ukraine’s efforts to restore its territorial integrity, ensure peace and achieve its historic aspiration to become a full member of the European Union,” the letter concludes.
The CMU says the new position is an “outstanding achievement” for António Costa, recognizing his “leadership and dedication” to “promoting unity and cooperation within the European Union,” and recalling his actions in the first hours of the Russian invasion of the European Union, Ukraine, Portugal’s role in hosting Ukrainian refugees, and its visit to the war-torn country, “underlining the deep commitment” not only to Ukraine’s sovereignty but also to “the values of freedom and democracy.”
