The new UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer told Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday that he remains firm in his commitment to recognising the State of Palestine, as reflected in the Labour Party’s election campaign principles.
In a phone call between the two on Sunday, Starmer said his “long-standing policy of recognising (Palestine) to ensure its international legitimacy and to facilitate the peace process has not changed and that it is the indisputable right of all Palestinians.”
In the first conversation between the two since Starmer took office on Friday following Labour’s landslide victory in the general election the previous day, the new prime minister briefed Abbas on his priorities for the region, including achieving a ceasefire and the return of hostages held by Labour-backed Palestinian militias.
