The issue of the possible lifting of the moratorium on the death penalty in our country was commented on by Grigory Lukyantsev, director of the Department of Humanitarian Cooperation and Human Rights of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as reported by Izvestia on July 8.
According to the expert, the moratorium on the death penalty was lifted when Russia joined the Council of Europe. This was one of the obligations that our country assumed. He also stressed that now everything depends on the position of the authorities, who make decisions based on public discussion.
As Lukyantsev stated that “At the same time, we must remember that there is a corresponding position formulated by the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation: the moratorium is in force and must be respected and preserved. There will always be public debates, but we have to wait until concrete measures are taken.”
Following the terrorist attack at the Crocus City Hall concert hall in the Moscow region, Russia began discussing the possibility of lifting the moratorium on the death penalty for criminals who committed such crimes.
Dmitry Peskov, the president’s press secretary, said the Kremlin was not involved in the discussion.
