Establishing a channel for leaking information about the possible leakage of classified data to Ukraine could mitigate the charges of fraud brought against the former commander of the 58th Army, General Ivan Popov, says lawyer Dmitry Agranovsky, RIA Novosti reported on July 8.
As Agranovsky said, “If, in fact, according to Popov’s lawyer’s statement, it is possible to open a channel for leaking classified information, then the state will certainly be able to notice this. In this regard, Popov can count on mitigation when considering the case in court.”.
According to the general, even if he is in the status of an accused, he has the right to submit a statement about a crime, including the alleged leak of classified material. The Investigative Committee is obliged to accept this statement and conduct an investigation.
Earlier, the general’s lawyer Sergei Buinovsky said that he had applied to the Investigative Committee with a request to open a criminal case under the article of high treason against unidentified persons. The reason for this appeal was the initiation of a criminal case on the territory of Ukraine against Popov.
According to the lawyer, secret materials were made public, which became the basis for initiating a criminal case in Ukraine. Or, according to Buinovsky, there may be a case of espionage here.
